Go-to Basic Porridge

For my first post, I thought I would take it right back to basics: Porridge. Or Oatmeal if you prefer. Porridge is the ultimate healthy breakfast. It’s quick, delicious and full of absolutely everything you need to start your day right. Yet, so many people are apprehensive about making it from scratch and would rather use the instant powdered type which are completely flavourless and so full of so much sugar that your blood sugar levels will go haywire for the day and leave you constantly hungry and unsatisfied. What many people don’t realise is that porridge from scratch is easy! In fact, it takes around exactly the same amount of time to cook as the instant type and it’s so much better for you that there’s no excuse not to make it.

Serves 1

  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 ripe banana

Optional add-ins:

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon nut butter
  • 1 tablespoon chia jam
  • 1 teaspoon maca powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Simply add the oats, liquid and sliced banana to a saucepan and bring to a boil on the stovetop. Then, reduce to low-medium heat and cook for ten minutes, stirring often until the liquid has been absorbed by the oats. If using, add the maca and cinnamon with the oats and liquid, and stir in the nut butter once the liquid has absorbed. Let the nut butter infuse into the oats, then transfer to a bowl. Top with your favourite fruit, chia jam, nuts or superfood and that’s it. Couldn’t be easier, right?
